Hua Hsu sums up the Roxanne Shante brouhaha of the past few days here. Having seen her talk about this in Minneapolis a few years ago, as well as reading about it in Yes Yes Y'all and seeing her on VH1's "100 Best Hip-Hop Songs" do the same, the thing that occurred to me, and that I haven't seen elsewhere, is that maybe--maybe--one reason she called herself a doctor, and put out that story, is that it gave her cachet and upped her fee as a motivational speaker. I have no idea whether she ever practiced as a doctor in any sense, but I do know she gives a lot of talks about her life and struggles. I don't think that makes any of it more honorable or anything, but it makes sense to me if that's why.
